The Wildlife Trusts’: Renters’ Retreat

RHS Gold, Best in Category and People’s Choice at RHS Hampton Court 2023

The 'Renter's Retreat' show garden was my way of inspiring and empowering the many renters across the country to pursue their gardening ambitions, both for themselves and for nature. Sponsored by The Wildlife Trusts, the garden showcased ideas that could work for urban homeowners and renters alike. I focused on practical, achievable solutions for those without direct access to soil, including dismantable raised beds, reclaimed pots, a hügelkultur-inspired mound, containerized trees, and even a compact wildlife pond.

I embraced challenges that many designers shy away from—small space, north-facing orientation, and poor access. Despite these, I transformed the tiny plot into a welcoming haven for both people and wildlife. The design featured robust, shade-tolerant, multi-season plants, along with small-scale composting and water capture solutions. I also integrated subtle habitats to encourage biodiversity, creating a space that was as calming as it was environmentally friendly. A key aspect was ensuring everything could be easily moved if the tenant or homeowner relocated.

I was honored to receive high praise from both the judges and the public for this design. It earned an RHS Gold Medal, the “Best Get Started Garden” award, and the coveted “People’s Choice Award” for the Get Started Garden category.
